Happy Birthday America
It feels like just yesterday that I poured my heart into my colorful motorcycle artwork, AMERICA. Time really flies, doesn’t it?
I whipped up AMERICA, a stunning piece that measures 48″ x 60″, back in 2016 as a heartfelt commission for an amazing collector in the beautiful landscapes of the Northwest. This artwork isn’t just a painting; it’s a tribute to the iconic Captain America chopper from the beloved 1969 movie Easy Rider.
AMERICA is a captivating centerpiece that draws you in, inviting you to explore the rich details and textures it offers. Since it was finished, countless fans have taken this warm invitation, getting lost in its vibrant visuals and the touching story behind it.
The America Tour
Not too long after America found its new spot in Tacoma, I received an exciting call from David Wagner, the esteemed museum curator. He was in the midst of putting together the highly anticipated LUSTER: Realism and Hyperrealism in Contemporary Automobile and Motorcycle Paintings exhibition, a showcase that would highlight the breathtaking artistry of the automotive world.
David wanted me to join the museum tour celebrating the vibrant and dynamic world of car and motorcycle art. I was absolutely stoked to receive such an invitation, as the opportunity to participate in this event was something I deeply valued. However, sadly, despite my enthusiasm, I found myself in the unfortunate position of having no art pieces to lend for the extensive two-year tour David had meticulously lined up. This aspect left me feeling a mix of excitement about my involvement and disappointment over my lack of contributions.
I chatted with David about my concerns, and he suggested borrowing some of my artworks for the tour.
I was initially hesitant to part with my creations, but the thought of reaching a wider audience was enticing. It took a little nudging, but I figured, why not give it a shot?
I actually had one painting, DREAM 103, which I just wrapped up for a Sturgis exhibit during the motorcycle rally. This piece was particularly special to me, as it encapsulated my passion for both art and motorcycle culture. I let David know I was cool with lending it for the show since I was excited about the prospect of sharing my work with a larger audience.
But he wanted a few more pieces, so I took his advice and started reaching out to my collectors who had some of my older motorcycle artworks. It was a great opportunity to showcase my art and connect with fellow enthusiasts. In the end, it totally paid off, with two collectors offering to let me borrow two pieces, AMERICA and INDIAN SUMMER.
The pieces were displayed at their first venue, the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach, Florida. I could feel that my artwork resonated with the audience, igniting new conversations about my creative journey.
Celebrating Milestones
As I reflect on my artwork proudly celebrating its epic ten-year milestone, I am also reminded that our beautiful country, the United States, affectionately known as “America,” is joyfully celebrating its monumental 250th anniversary. This is a significant moment in history, not only for our nation but also for all those who have contributed to its rich tapestry of culture, innovation, and resilience over the past two and a half centuries.
