International Museum Day is a holiday that celebrates museums of all kinds. This day serves not only to recognize the artistic and historical contributions of these institutions but also to highlight their role in community engagement and educational outreach.
It has been celebrated since 1977 and is now celebrated on every continent. Today, it is observed in over 150 countries, with thousands of museums participating worldwide. The main goal of the holiday is to promote the importance of museums as educational tools and as a means of greater cultural understanding. This includes fostering partnerships between museums and local communities to enhance accessibility and inclusivity.
Museums around the world sponsor events on or around this day to encourage people to visit them and to inform the public about the struggles that modern museums often face. In addition, consider participating in virtual tours or online exhibitions if visiting in person isn’t feasible.
Celebrate by visiting museums near you, learning about the events they sponsor, and how you can help.
Join the global celebration by sharing your museum experiences on social media with the hashtag #InternationalMuseumDay.
