Forever Evergreen

Timelessness Content

I was recently doing some website updates, sorting through old posts, fixing broken links, and the like. During this process, I stumbled upon some posts that either needed complete rewriting or were too outdated to maintain. It’s a bit of a hefty project given that there are nearly 800 posts on this website. However, the challenge lies not only in updating these articles, but also in ensuring they remain relevant.

While most are timely posts of one sort or another, several are timeless or what is commonly referred to as evergreen.

Evergreen content is content that remains relevant and interesting for an extended period of time. This type of content is invaluable for any website, as it continues to attract readers and drive traffic over the long term.

Evergreen content gets its name from the evergreen pine and fir trees that keep their green color even during the winter. Like the trees, evergreen content does not lose its appeal, even as it ages and the season changes.

Ultimately, maintaining a balance between timely and evergreen content is crucial for a well-rounded blog.

An evergreen post is content (like an article, guide, or video) that remains relevant, useful, and fresh for readers long after its publication date, avoiding trends or news cycles, much like an evergreen tree stays green year-round. These posts focus on timeless topics, often how-to guides, definitions, or fundamental tips, providing consistent value and attracting steady organic traffic and SEO benefits over months or years.

Key Characteristics:

    • Timelessness: Addresses universal questions or concepts that don’t become outdated.
    • Longevity: Stays valuable and fresh for extended periods, unlike timely news.
    • Consistent Traffic: Attracts ongoing organic search traffic and engagement.
    • Examples: How-to guides, ultimate lists, definitions, basic tutorials, FAQs, or foundational concepts.

Why It's Important:

    • High ROI: One evergreen post can generate value for years, reducing the constant need for new content.
    • SEO Powerhouse: Ranks well in search engines, bringing consistent, high-quality leads.
    • Authority Building: Positions creators as reliable sources of enduring information.

Contrast with Timely Content:

    • Timely Content: Spikes in views quickly (e.g., a news story, a seasonal trend) then drops off as it becomes irrelevant.
    • Evergreen Content: Maintains steady interest and traffic over time, like a staple item.
